Unique Headstones, Original Headstones Beautiful Gravestone

Each memorial stone is custom designed, hand-lettered and hand-carved. I find inspiration in old graves yards around Ireland and the 18th Century English churchyard memorials and New England tombstones that can be seen along the eastern coast of the USA, from Maine, Rhode Island, Chesapeake, Savannah and New Orleans. I believe the that there are a couple of basic principals which make an elegant timeless grave stone are; Good design and layout, fine hand drawn lettering, beautifully V-cut letters, symbols and detail and fine quality natural stone. These attributes combined with a personalized stone and years of learning the craft of a stone mason and letter cutting create a beautiful headstone.

Each stone I design specifically for the client based on a meeting in the workshop. I try to capture something of the person being memorialized and reflect that person in the design. It’s always good if you can send me or bring along photos of the plot and surrounding headstones. Which cemetery is it? Is it a churchyard or council cemetery? Who’s in charge of it? What are the rules, regulations, height, size of plot, base size?

Gravestones prices depend on the amount of detail in the design, stone type; marble, granite, slate, limestone, where it’s to be installed if there is kerbing and many other factors etc… Timescale can take anywhere between two and five months depending on the previously mentioned factors. If you’d like to arrange a meeting in the workshop let me know when suits you and we can discuss the possibilities. I can show you stone samples and I can get an idea of what can be made to suit you and what is fitting for the memorial. It’s good to think about the local stone, the existing gravestones, what inscription you’d like on the stone and if you’d like a symbol or other personal detail. Also it’s worth thinking about the shape and height of the stones you’ve seen which you like and also the colour of stone.

Ireland has a great history of memorial carving and letter cutting, Seamus Murphy, Eric Gill and Michael Biggs are well known letter carvers from the 20th Century who revived and passed on the craft of fine hand drawn lettering cut into stone.
